The Data Governance Panel Explores The Complex Business of Using Data Correctly

Data Governance requires people, processes, and technology to collaborate seamlessly in order to be successful. But it can be executed using different frameworks and operating models, depending on project needs. During Informatica World, a Data Governance customer panel featured a selection of use cases and styles that showcased a wide range of strategies. Through presentations and a Q & A session, panelists shared their stories, tips, and tricks for establishing a sustainable, results-oriented data governance program within any organization.

The panelists were:

  • Alex Zimmerman, Director Data Management & Business Intelligence, Christus Health
  • Norman Steele, Principal Consultant, Koios Consulting
  • Vinaya Thummala, Enterprise Data Quality Specialist, American Family Insurance
  • Sarah Moen, Information Quality Specialist, American Family Insurance
  • Terri Mikol, Director Data Governance, UPMC
  • Amit Jha, Global Practice Head Data Management, Wipro

Moderated by Rob Karel, Informatica’s VP of Product Marketing & Strategy, the panel included healthcare and insurance professionals and presented a variety of use cases and scenarios. Issues ranged from meshing a number of legacy systems and new systems, to security and life cycle management (keeping data around for just the right amount of time) to data quality management.

Policy, standards and process were cited by panelists as keys to success, and panelists agreed Informatica’s suite of data management solutions helped facilitate great solutions, including Data Governance tools that facilitated building structure from unstructured data. In healthcare, there are thousands of inefficiencies, as UPMC’s Terri Mikol put it, and MDM tools demonstrate value by making manually intensive processes automated—you save time and money. Although panelists agreed sometimes benefits can be hard to measure, panelists stressed the importance of being revolutionary, not evolutionary.
